Clean after every use

Soil left on a blade traps moisture and causes rust, and dried mud is hard to remove later. After digging, scrape and rinse off the soil, then dry the blade before storing. This simple habit prevents most damage.

Keep rust at bay

In India’s humid and monsoon conditions, rust is the main enemy. After cleaning and drying, wipe the metal blade with a light coat of oil before storing. For existing rust, scrub it off with a wire brush or sandpaper, then oil the blade.

Sharpen the edge

A sharp spade cuts soil and roots with far less effort. Periodically sharpen the cutting edge with a file or sharpening stone, following the blade’s existing angle. A sharp tool is an easier, safer tool.

Care for the handle

• Wooden handles: wipe clean, and occasionally rub in linseed oil to prevent drying and cracking. Sand off any splinters.
• Fibreglass/metal handles: simply wipe clean and check for cracks or looseness.

Check the fitting

Inspect where the blade meets the handle for any looseness, and tighten or repair it before it fails. A loose head is unsafe and gets worse with use.

Store them properly

Hang tools up or stand them blade-up in a dry place — never left lying on damp ground. Hanging keeps the edge protected and the handle off the floor, away from moisture.
