How to Dig Properly Without Hurting Your Back

How to Dig Properly Without Hurting Your Back

Why technique matters

Digging is hard work, and poor technique leads to back pain and fatigue. With the right method, you’ll dig more efficiently and protect your body. Here’s how to do it properly.

Use the right tool for the soil

Use a sharp spade to cut into firm or rooty ground, and a shovel to scoop and move loose material. The right tool means far less effort and strain.

Position your body correctly

  • Stand close to the spot you’re digging.
  • Keep your back straight and bend at the knees and hips, not the waist.
  • Place one foot near the blade to push it in.

Let your legs do the work

Push the blade into the soil with your foot, using your body weight rather than your arms. When lifting, bend your knees and lift with your legs — not by bending and straining your back.

Don’t overload the blade

Lifting a huge, heavy load each time strains your back and tires you fast. Take smaller, manageable scoops — you’ll work longer and safer.

Pivot, don’t twist

When moving soil to the side, turn your whole body by moving your feet, rather than twisting your spine with a loaded shovel. Twisting under load is a common cause of back injury.

Pace yourself

Take breaks, stay hydrated (especially in the heat), and warm up before heavy digging. Steady, well-paced work beats rushing and straining.

Keep the blade sharp

A sharp spade cuts into soil with far less effort than a blunt one. Keeping the edge sharp saves your energy and your back.
